MIAA Water Polo struggles in the Philmore Cup
League only produces two wins in its annual battle with Pennsylvania powers
Not many high school conferences on the east coast field sanctioned water polo leagues, but the MIAA has thrived with the sport for much of its existence. One of the traditional events on the water polo calendar is the annual Philmore Cup, which matches MIAA schools against Pennsylvania private school programs from the the Philadelphia area.
Over the years, the MIAA teams have held their own in this competition, but it was a tough go for the locals last weekend as the PA teams hosted and won the event 8-3.
Four of the six MIAA programs - Calvert Hall, Gilman, Loyola and Mount St. Joseph competed in the event, held on Friday and Saturday.
Gilman faired the best of the MIAA teams, posting a 1-1 record, which included a 17-11 win over Germantown Academy. Mount St. Joseph went 1-2, Loyola went 1-3 and Calvert Hall was 0-2.
Most MIAA water polo teams will be back in action this weekend when they participate in the Battle of the Beltways tournament at the Naval Academy. Leave play is slated to get underway Monday, September 11th.
