Undefeated Archbishop Spalding dominating the 2024 MIAA volleyball landscape
The Cavaliers are 11-0 early in the second half of the season and have established themselves as the team to beat
Despite never having won the MIAA A Conference volleyball championship, and not having any titles since capturing the MIAA B Conference crown in 2007, Archbishop Spalding has become the team to beat in 2024.
The Cavaliers singled their intentions to reach the top spot in the conference in their opening match when they defeated defending champion Mount St. Joseph, 3-2, in an outstanding five set thriller. Spalding then proceeded to defeat every other team in the conference, including a three match run over traditional powers Loyola, Gilman and Calvert Hall in which it dropped just one set.
In its last match, on Wednesday, Spalding won the rematch with St. Joe, this time by a 3-1 score.
Those remain the only setbacks this year for MSJ, which is in second place in the league with a 9-2 record, followed by Loyola (7-3), Calvert Hall (6-3) and Gilman (7-4). Boys' Latin, which also took a set from Spalding in the first meeting between the teams, holds sixth place in the league and figures to be the sixth seed for the playoffs. The Lakers are 5-5.
Spalding needs just one more win, in its final seven matches, to match last year's win total of 12.
