Mount St. Joseph basketball on a roll
Gaels have won six straight as MIAA A Conference playoff races tighten up
Since suffering a blowout loss at Archbishop Spalding in its first contest of 2025, the Mount St. Joseph basketball team has done an about face, rolling off six straight wins, including five in league play, to move within half game of first place in the Black Division of the MIAA A Conference.
In succession, the Gaels have knocked off Boys’ Latin, John Carroll, Glenelg Country, McDonogh and St. Vincent Pallotti, as well a St. Mary’s Ryken in non conference action. Each of those teams, with the exception of Pallotti, is ranked in High School On SI’s Top 25 state rankings.
The Gaels (17-7 overall) are 7-2 in conference play, just behind Glenelg Country (7-1) for first place in the division. The Gaels appear headed for a down to the wire battle for the division title with GCS and Spalding (14-4, 6-2).
John Carroll and Boys’ Latin are each 2-5 in league play and will battle for the division’s final playoff position.
The Red Division is just as tight, with Mount Carmel (19-3 overall), which travels to St. Joe on Wednesday night, tied with St. Frances (17-4) for first place, each at 6-1. St. Frances won the first meeting between the two with the rematch slated for Feb. 5 at Mount Carmel.
No one else in the division is in position to challenge for first place, but McDonogh (3-4), Loyola Blakefield (3-6) and Calvert Hall (2-6) all remain in contention for a playoff spot.
