MIAA soccer update (9/19/2024)
Loyola and McDonogh remain undefeated, but Curley, Gilman and Calvert Hall are in the mix
The MIAA A Conference soccer season is starting to take shape and, as expected, defending champion Loyola Blakefield (4-0-1) is in the top spot with 13 points. The Dons have been absolutely dominant, defeating Archbishop Spalding, Concordia Prep and Calvert Hall by a combined score of 20-0. They also own a 3-1 win over Gilman.
The Dons only blemish, if you call it that, was a 2-2 draw with McDonogh, which is 2-0-2 (8 points) thus far. The Eagles edged Archbishop Curley, 4-3, in a high scoring affair, doubled up Spalding, 4-2, and played Gilman, another member of the conference’s lead pack, to a 1-1 draw, on Wednesday.
Gilman (2-1-2) is tied with McDonogh for third place in the A Conference. The Greyhounds have not scored more than one goal in a league game, but they have played stingy defense, edging Mount St. Joseph and John Carroll, each by 1-0 scores, and played Calvert Hall to a scoreless draw.
Curley (3-1) currently sits in second place in the conference and it’s offense has been the key. The Friars have scored at least three goals in each of their games and they own wins over Spalding, Concordia Prep and Mount St. Joseph. Curley has also outscored three non-conference opponents by a combined 15-4.
Spalding has been the best of the rest so far, owning a 2-3 league record, while John Carroll and St. Joe are each 1-3. Concordia Prep has yet to win or tie in five league matches.
Very few league matches have taken place thus far in the B Conference, as Park and St. Mary’s are each 1-0 and both defeated Glenelg Country by 3-0 and 3-1 scores, respectively.
No league games have been played yet in the C Conference.
