St. Paul's Matthew Guy leads MIAA A Individual Golf Championships after Day 1
After sharing the 2023 crown, senior first a 72 at the Naval Academy Golf Course
April 10, 2025
After rain forced the postponement of the first round of the MIAA Individual Championship on Monday, April 7, the A-Conference renewed their tournament on Wednesday, April 9 at the Naval Academy Golf Course. Due to the lack of available tee times at the Navy course, the B and C Conference Individual Championship will be held at a separate location later this spring.
Matthew Guy, a senior at St. Paul's, posted an opening round 72 (2 over par) to take the first round lead in the A-Conference event on Wednesday. Guy was a co-champion of this event in 2023 as a sophomore.
Nolan Vogel (Loyola) posted 74 to sit two shots behind Guy, while three players (Alexei Voice, Ethan Coleman, Christian Trivane) are tied for 3rd after round one with rounds of 75.
James Jean-Baptiste, one of six Calvert Hall players to make the 18-hole cut, is four behind Guy at 76, matched by Aidan Tudor (Mount Saint Joseph) and Harrison Meyer (Loyola).
Calvert Hall and Mount Saint Joseph both featured all six of their competitors making the cut, which was fixed at 82, while Loyola and Archbishop Spalding had four of six players qualify for round two. St. Paul's, Gilman and McDonogh failed to have the mandatory four players make the cut, thus they are each eliminated from the team championship portion of the event.
The team championship of the Individual Championship is settled after round 2 with the school having the four lowest stroke play totals winning that event. Loyola (307) currently leads, with Mount Saint Joseph (309), Calvert Hall (312) and Spalding (318) trailing the Dons.
Calvert Hall head coach Drew Forrester was impressed with day one play from the 42 players who teed it up. "The Naval Academy course is outstanding. It's truly a very difficult test of golf," says Forrester. "To have 18 rounds in the 70's at an unfamiliar course that played as tough as Navy did on Wednesday is a testament to the high level of golf that's played every spring in the A-Conference."
The second and final round will be played on Friday, May 2nd at Bulle Rock GC in Havre De Grace, MD.
