Gilman and St. Paul's heading for a squash showdown
Greyhounds and Crusaders are both undefeated as they prepare for the stretch run
The start of the MIAA squash postseason is less than a month away, but the race for the top seed is well underway and may very well be decided by the outcome of a head-to-head showdown between Gilman and St. Paul's, at the end of the month.
Gilman has won the last four league titles and 14 of 16 since the MIAA adopted squas as a varsity sport prior to the 2007-2008 season. And, the Greyhounds are in the thick of the chase for this year's crown as well, as they currently sit with a 4-0 league record. St. Paul's is also undefeated, at 3-0, and will make its bid to show it can challenge Gilman when the teams meet for the first time on Tuesday, Jan. 14. The two rivals will meet just before the playoffs when the Crusaders host the Greyhounds on Jan. 29.
Gilman has just dropped just one point, in a match against McDonogh, in winning its first four league contests. In addition to McDonogh, the Greyounds own wins over Calvert Hall, Boys' Latin and Park. St. Paul's has powered its way to 7-0 victories in all three of its MIAA matches, blanking Loyola, Friends and BL.
Loyola is currently in third place in the conference with a 2-1 mark and Park is in fourth at 0-2. Thus far, Calvert Hall, Friends, McDonogh and Boys' Latin are winless in league play.
The MIAA Squash Championship Match will take place on Feb. 6 on the home court of the higher seed. St. Paul's will then host the individual tournament, Feb. 10-12.
