St. Paul's grad Cam Nelson selected in MLB Draft
Nelson was a three-time All-MIAA selection for the Crusaders
Cameron "Cam" Nelson, who starred in baseball and basketball at St. Paul's School in Brooklandville took a huge step towards a childhood dream this week. Nelson was selected in the fifth round of the 2025 MLB Draft, No. 138 overall, by the Colorado Rockies.
Nelson, who played the last two seasons in the ACC at Wake Forest University, was a three-time All-MIAA baseball pick with the Crusaders. Nelson, who throws and bats left-handed, was rated as the No. 4 player in Maryland as a senior and the state's No. 1 outfielder in 2023 by Perfect Game.
At Wake Forest he got in 45 games as a freshman in 2024, making 26 starts, recording 17 hits and driving in 18 runs. He also pitched six times, racking up 5.2 innings with 10 strikeouts. In 2025, he hit .318 with eight extra-base hits, 20 runs scored, 20 walks and 19 RBI. His OPS was .974 with an On Base Percentage of .489. Defensively, he made just one error in 27 games with two outfield assists. He did not pitch as a sophomore.
Nelson is "known for his bat-to-ball ability and strike zone discipline," according the MLB.com. His 2025 college season was limited as he battled a soft-tissue injury. He rebounded, however, to perform well in a wood-bat summer league. He is a developmental professional prospect, but the Rockies see is athleticism, strong arm and baseball IQ as strong upside potential.
