MIAA Basketball Notebook: Holiday Edition
With the holiday tournaments wrapping up, league play is set to ramp up
Although the 2023-24 high school basketball season has been underway for nearly a month, only now, as the calendar turns to 2024 does it get really interesting with league competition.
From early January until the end of the regular season, league competition will be the primary focus in all three MIAA conferences.
In the A Conference, undefeated Mount St. Joseph (16-0) has already played three conference games and has taken the early lead in the Black Division. John Carroll (10-5) and Glenelg Country (3-5) are both 1-0 in league play, while Archbishop Spalding (5-4) is in 1-1 in the conference. Currently, Boys’ Latin and Gilman sit at 0-2 in league play.
In the Red Division, Our Lady of Mount Carmel (12-2) has already played four league games and won them all to hold girls place. Loyola Blakefield (11-3) is 2-1 in the conference, St. Frances (11-4) is 1-1 and Calvert hall (5-8) is 2-2. McDonogh has lost both of its league games so far and St. Vincent Pallotti has started at 0-4.
Only a handful of league games have been played in the MIAA B Conference so far, with Severn sitting at 1-0 in the Black Division, followed by two-time defending champion St. Mary’s, Archbishop Curley and Annapolis Area Christian, all at 1-1. Indian Creek sits at 0-1 thus far.
In the Red Division, Gerstell Academy is out to a 2-0 start, followed by St. Paul’s and St. John’s Catholic Prep, each 1-1 so far. Chapelgate Christian and Concordia Prep are each 0-1, while Friends School has yet to play its league opener.
The C Conference features just one division and no one has yet to tip-off a league contest. The first conference game is not slated until January 11th when Beth Tfiloh visits Saints Peter & Paul. The rest of the conference gets underway the following night.
