Spalding is rolling towards another baseball top seed
Four other teams alive for the final three playoff spots
The Archbishop Spalding baseball team is chasing a fourth consectuive MIAA A Conference baseball championship in 2025 and as the postseason rapidly approaches, the Cavaliers are once again on top of the league, holding first place with an 11-4 conference mark after 15 games.
The Cavaliers begin their final three game series of the regular season, on Monday, when they travel to Mount St. Joseph. St. Joe and John Carroll are tied for second, each at 8-4. John Carroll begins a three game set with Archbishop Curley on Monday before the Gaels and Patriots close the regular season with three against each other. If Spalding sweeps St. Joe it will clinch the top seed and home field advantage for the best-of-three semifinals. Even without a sweep, the Cavaliers are still well positioned to finish in first and, at worst second, which also provides homefield in the opening round.
Although they are currently tied for second, the Gaels and Patriots both need wins to guarantee their post-season place. Calvert Hall is currently in fourth at 7-5 and Curley, currently outside the playoff picture, is 6-6. With three games against John Carroll and three against Calvert Hall, to close the regular season, the Friars, who have five of their last six conference match-ups, still control their playoff destiny.
Prior to playing Curley, Calvert Hall has a three game set with Gilman as they seek to lock down their playoff spot. Gilman (3-9) remains mathematically alive, but neeeds to win out and have several things pan out, while Loyola (2-13) has fallen out of contention.
In the B Conference, Severn is in control of the Red Division with a 10-1 record, followed by McDonogh (8-2) and St. Paul's (6-4). St. Mary's (4-6) remains in contention for the third playoff position from that division.
Boys' Latin and Gestell are waging a tough battle for first place in the Black Division, both at 8-2 and both desitined for the playoffs. BL won the first meeting between the two teams and will host the Falcons on May 5 to close the regular season. St. John's Catholic Prep (4-4) and Annapolis Area Christian (4-6) are battling for third place in the division. The top three teams from each division advance to the league's double-elimination championship tournament.
The C Conference also has a two division setup with the top three teams in each division advancing to a double-elimination championship tournament.
In the Red Division the three playoff teams are known, but what is not known is what order they will finish. Currently, Beth Tfiloh, St. Frances and Concordia Prep are all tied for first place at 6-2. Beth Tfiloh has a five games left, including a home game with St. Frances on April 30. St. Frances and Concordia Prep also have five games left including a head-to-head match-up at Concordia on April 25.
Park holds first place in the Black Division with a 6-1 record, while St. Vincent Pallotti and Key are tied for second at 5-3. Those three appear destined for the playoffs, but Chapelgate Christian (3-5) still has an opportunity if it can close strong.
