Spalding, Mount St. Joe and John Carroll are leading the way in MIAA A baseball standings
Divisional races in the B and C Conferences are wide open as the season has passed the halfway mark
It seems as if the 2025 MIAA baseball season just tossed it its opening pitch, but time moves quickly and the regular season has already edged past the halfway point. Here is where things stand heading into this week's action.
A CONFERENCE
There is little surprise that Archbishop Spalding, which has won three consecutive A Conference baseball titles, is out in front once again. Currently, the Cavaliers are in a tight battle for league supremecy with Mount St. Joseph and John Carroll, neither of which have faced the Cavaliers yet in 2025.
Spalding (7-1) owns a half game lead on St. Joe (7-2) and a full game advantage on John Carroll (5-1) after sweeping Loyola Blakefield in its opening series, taking 2-of-3 from Archbishop Curley, and sweeping Gilman. The Cavaliers now enter a critical stetch, as they will face John Carroll three times this week, weather permitting, with two of those game at home, before battling rival Calvert Hall three times next week. After a week off of league play, Spalding will conclude its regular season schedule with a three-game showdown with St. Joe, beginning on April 28. The Cavs are 14-1 overall.
St. Joe (8-3 overall) opened its league schedule with a three-game sweep of Curley (1-5) and has since taken 2-of-3 from both Gilman (2-6) and Loyola (1-8). The Gaels are facing Calvert Hall (3-3) for three this week and will face John Carroll after their series with Spalding. JC opened it season with a loss to Gilman before taking the next two from the Greyhounds and sweeping Calvert Hall. Between its meetings with Spalding and MSJ, the Patriots will face Curley for three.
Only the top four teams qualify for the league playoffs which consist of two best-of-three semifinal series and a best-of-three championship series. With Spalding, St. Joe and John Carroll all with a leg up in the race for those spots, Calvert Hall currently has the edge for the fourth and final spot. The Cardinals, however, still have to play St. Joe and Spalding, as well as Gilman and Curley, their primary pursuers, before punching their place in the postseason.
Gilman resumes its league schedule on April 14 with a key series against Curley. The Greyhounds then battle Calvert Hall for three before closing with three against Loyola. Curley, which was boosted by its win over Spalding, which could also serve as key tie-break advantage, faces Loyola this week, before challenging Gilman next week. The Friars will then have three against John Carroll and three against Calvert Hall.
B CONFERNCE
The B Conference is split into two divisions and the top three squads from each division qualify for the league's double-elimination post-season championship tournament. Severn is well on its way to claiming one of those spots as its 6-0 league record (10-1 overall) puts it on top of the Red Division. McDonogh is in second at 4-2, while St. Mary's and St. Paul's are each 3-3. Mount Carmel is also in strong contention at 2-4, while Glenelg Country is 0-3.
The Black Division has equal competition for post-season spots, with Gerstell in first at 4-2, followed by Boys' Latin (3-1), Annapolis Area Christian (2-2) and St. John's Catholic Prep (2-3). Only Indian Creek is well off the pace at 0-6.
With each team slated to play 13 league games, the door is still wide open for the standings to fluctuate. Severn has key battles this week with Boys' Latin and Gerstell. BL also has a huge matchup with its arch-rival St. Paul's.
C CONFERENCE
The C Conference has the same setup as the B Conference with two divisions each sending three teams to the post-season double-elimination championship tournament.
Beth Tfiloh, off to a 6-1 start, leads the way in the Red Division, while Concordia Prep (3-2) and St. Frances (2-1) sit in the next two positions. Friends (1-3) and Jemicy (0-3) need to makeup ground in the playoff chase.
The Black Division has a tight battle for the top spot as three leaders have created separation. Park holds first place with a 4-1 record, followed closely by St. Vincent Pallotti nd Key School, each at 3-2. Chapelgate Christian is still in the mix at 1-2, while Saints Peter & Paul has fallen back at 0-6.
Beth Tfiloh is idle in league play until April 23 when it will visit Concordia Prep followed by a game at Park on the 25th. Concordia will look to draw closer to the Warriors before that match-up as it faces Saints Peter & Paul this week and Chapelgate next week.
