He's the Guy
St. Paul's Matthew Guy pulls away for an 8-stroke victory in MIAA A Conference Individual Golf Tournament
For the second time in three years St. Paul's Matthew Guy is a MIAA A Conference golf champion and this time he has the title all to himself.
As a sophomore, Guy shared the title with Loyola Blakefield's Brayden Decapite, but the senior would not be denied or tied on Friday at Bulle Rock Golf Course in Havre de Grace. After shooting on opening round 72, on April 10 at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Course, Guy carried a two-shot lead into Friday's final round. After three holes the lead grew to four shots. Loyola's Nolan Vogel, however, climbed back within two shots as the players made the turn.
Down the stretch it was all Guy.
The Crusader birdied the par 4 10th hole and gained a stroke on his closest pursuer on each of the first five holes of the back nine, before surrendering one back with a boggie on the par 5 15th. Guy got that back with a birdie on the 17th and finished the back nine with a 34 to card a one under par 71 on the day, and a two round total of 143. Vogel held on to finish second with a two round score of 151, two shots ahead of teammate Ethan Coleman and Mount St. Joseph's Aidan Tudor, who tied for third at 153.
Another St. Joe golfer, Alexi Voice, rounded out the top five.
Calvert Hall entered the day in third place in the team standings, but shot a combined score of 307 at Bulle Rock to claim the team stroke play crown by four strokes. The Cardinals' two day total of 619, topped St. Joe (623) and Loyola (625).
Enzo Pobletts led the way on Friday with a 75. Brooks Manning and Clayton Wright each carded a 77 for the Cardinals and James Jean-Batiste posted a 78.
