SJCP caps surprising run to MIAA C golf championship
The Vikings win three playoff matches to capture their first crown
St. John's Catholic Prep, for the first time in school history, owns a golf championship.
The third-seeded Vikings edged fourth-seeded Annapolis Area Christian, 11-10, in a surprising finals match-up in Monday's league championship, at Worthington Manor Golf Course. The Vikings had taken out second-seeded Indian Creek, 12-9, in the semifinals while AACS bounced top-seeded Jemicy, 11.5-9.5. SJCP opened the tournament with a 15.5-5.5 quarterfinal win over Friends School.
The championship was not decided until the final putt of the match and the Vikings were led, as they have been all season, by freshman Luke Scalzi.
SJCP went 4-3 in the regular season and defeated AACS by the same 11-10 score in their final match before the playoffs. In winning its first MIAA golf crown, St. John's denied the Eagles (6-4 overall) what would have been their fourth C Conference title and their fifth MIAA golf title overall.
