Gilman wrestling continues its dominance with 2024 MIS title

Gilman wrestling continued its historic 2023-24 season over the weekend, winning its first every Maryland Independent State Tournament, just one week removed from its first MIAA Wrestling Tournament title and its first ever MIAA A Conference dual meet crown. The Greyhounds won the MIS in impressive fashion as well, topping second place St. Mary's Ryken 257.5-222.5 for the top spot.

Loyola Blakefield (207 points) placed third, while MIAA schools Mount St. Joseph (186.5) and Archbishop Spalding (173.5) rounded out the top five spots in the team standings.

Gilman sent five wrestlers and got individual titles from Liam McGettigan (106), Emmitt Sherlock (165) and Gabriel Smith (190), while Tyson Sherlock (144) and John Jurkovic (150) brought home second place medals. The Greyhounds got a third plac finish from Zach Glory (132), while JD Vassar (113), Nick Haughey (175) and Sebastian Chaney (215) each placed fourth.

Loyola, Mount St. Joseph and Archbishop Spalding each sent three wrestlers to finals and came away with one champion each. Judah Aybar (150) was an individual champion for the Dons, while Jayden Jackson (113) and Luke Randazzo (285) both placed second. Carter Nogle (138) won a title for the Gaels, while Jake Tamai (120) and Austin Lewis (190) both came up with second place finishes.

Spalding crowned two individual champions as Vincent Paolucci (132) and Delmar White (285) each won their weight classes for Spalding, which got second place performances from Sean Garreston (126) and Zane Leitzel (138).

McDonogh's Noah Onkst (215) was the only other MIAA wrestler who won an individual championship.
