2024 MIAA Track & Field Championships: Calvert Hall builds an early lead after Day 1
St. Mary’s out in front in the B Conference
The 2024 MIAA Track & Field Championships got underway on Thursday at Calvert Hall and the host Cardinals amassed 73 points to take an early lead in the race to defend the A Conference title they have won the last two years.
Gilman (45 points) sits in second place in the event, which will conclude on Saturday at Archbishop Spalding, and McDonogh is in third (30 points). In the B Conference, St. Mary’s (40 points) holds a narrow lead over St. Vincent Pallotti (34) and Annapolis Area Christian (33).
Antoine McNair Jr. earned 10 of Calvert Hall’s points with a victory in the long jump. He leapt 22-feet-11.5-inches. Ethan Ruffin also won a gold medal for the Cardinals, clearing 6-feet-8-inches in the high jump.
Calvert Hall, with the team of Ryan Warner, Cort Schroder, Caleb Mincey and Cameron Davis, won the 4x800 meters relay in a time of 7:41.07.
In the last event, the MIAA’s reigning long-distance star, captured 10 more points for the Cardinals, as Davis won the 3,200 meters with a time of 9:21.15, more than nine seconds faster than teammate JD Hughes who claimed the silver medal.
Mount St. Joseph’s Braeden Dushkin won discus with a throw of 157-feet-8-inches. McDonogh’s 4x200 meters relay team of Andy Nesterovsky, Femi Ayanbadejo, Brandon Finney and Kyle Rollins also won a gold medal with a time of 1:28.75.
In the B Conference, Jack Drucis won the long jump for St. Mary’s, going 20-feet-2-inches and Concordia Prep’s Vance Harris set a B Conference meet record in the high jump by clearing 6-fee-8-inches to win a gold medal.
John Carroll’s 4x800 meters relay team also won a title, as Mitch Gier, Alex Wohlfort, Evan DeVoe and Will Root raced to victory in 8:46.21, while Mount Carmel’s Anthony Curtis Jr., Corey Rideout, Kai Sands and Dontavious Murphy-Sorrell post a 4x200 meter time of 1:33.59 to win a title.
St. Vincent Pallotti’s Caleb Tenney also won an individual championship on Thursday, winning the 3,200 meters in a B Conference meet record time of 9:05.34.
The remaining events will take place or be concluded on Saturday at Spalding.
