With 12-of-15 players back, Calvert Hall is favored to defend its MIAA A golf title
Loyola, St. Paul's and Gilman appear to have the talent and experience to challenge the Cardinals
March 18, 2024
Calvert Hall golf returns 12 of 15 players from last year's MIAA A Conference championship team and will seek to win back-to-back titles for the first time since 1996-97 when their campaign kicks off on March 20 vs. McDonogh at Woodholme Country Club.
The Cardinals finished 9-3 last season, then defeated Loyola in the semifinals and St. Paul's in the championship to capture their first A Conference crown since 2013.
Calvert Hall returns three All-Conference players from a season ago in Caleb Itzoe, Felix Endler and Ryan Hoffner.
Both Loyola and St. Paul's return a number of their top performers, while Gilman returns three-time All-Conference player Bennett Espenshade.
Mount Saint Joseph, Archbishop Spalding and McDonogh are each expected to field improved squads from a year ago when the three schools missed the A-Conference playoffs.
"The A-Conference features outstanding golf from all seven schools," said Calvert Hall's Drew Forrester, who will coach in his 12th season with the Cardinals in 2024. "We know there's a very fine line between winning and losing. In 80% of the matches, if not more, it comes down to the last group on the 12th and final green. Every team has quality throughout its roster."
The top four teams in the conference will make the playoffs. The championship final is set for Saturday, May 18 at Mountain Branch Golf Club.
Loyola (Braden DeCapite) and St. Paul's (Matthew Guy) return the reigning Individual Co-Champions. This year's individual tournament is set for April 15 (Eagle's Nest Country Club) and May 8 (Naval Academy Golf Club).
