Concordia Prep and Pallotti open MIAA C baseball playoffs with victories
Saints will visit Park and Panthers will travel to Beth Tfiloh, on Monday, as the double-elimination tournament continues
The MIAA C Conference baseball playoffs got underway on Friday with the first two games in the league’s double-elimination tournament. Concordia Prep, the second-seed from the Red Division, defeated Key School, the Black Division’s third-seed, 5-3, while St. Vincent Pallotti, the second seed from the Black Division, topped Friends School, the Red Division third seed, 8-5.
Concordia Prep responded to a three-run top of the fifth with three runs of its own in the home half of the inning to regain a lead and hold on for a 5-3 victory over the visiting Obezags in the opening round of the 2024 MIAA C Conference baseball tournament.
Caleb Couser led off the home fifth with an inside the park home run to tie the contest at 3-3 and his brother Jonathan Couser followed with a home run over the left-field fence. Jordan Mentzell then singled and, after the first out was recorded, AJ Anderson was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Brody Humphrey singled and scored Mentzell, but Anderson was cut down at the plate for the final out.
Caleb Couser, who went the distance on the mound, then held Key scoreless over the final two innings to lock down the win. He struck out eight and walked just two.
Christopher Williams knocked in all three Key runs with a bases loaded double.
Friends scored two runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 5-4 lead, but host Pallotti responded with four runs in its half of the sixth to regain the lead and get the win.
The Panthers loaded the bases with one out and plated a pair of runs on a single by Gus Chakmackian. With two down and the bases juiced again, Henry Heard drove in the final two runs with a base hit.
On Monday, Concordia Prep will travel to Park School and Pallotti will visit Beth Tfiloh, as both top seeds see their first action in the tournament. Also on Monday, Key and Friends will square off in the first elimination game of the tournament.
