MIAA Football Championship Sunday is set
Spalding and McDonogh to battle in the A Conference; Concordia Prep and John Carroll compete for the B Conference title
After a pair of semifinal playoff games in the MIAA A and B Conference last weekend, the stage is set for Championship Sunday at Johnny Unitas Stadium, this Sunday, November 19th.
Defending champion Archbishop Spalding will face third-seed McDonogh in the A Conference championship game, which follow the B Conference title game between Concordia Prep and John Carroll.
Spalding (9-2) booked its return trip to the finals with a convincing 28-10 win over Loyola Blakefield (6-4). The two teams had battled into overtime the previous week, but the Cavaliers took control of this one early and cruised behind the running of Kaden Curtis, who rushed 16 times for 243-yards and three touchdowns.
Third-seeded McDonogh (7-2) went on the road and routed second-seeded Mount St. Joseph, 30-6, to earn its spot at “The U.” The victory reversed a 26-20 loss to the Gaels (7-5) during the regular season.
McDonogh’s only other setback this fall came at the hands of Spalding, 31-14 on Sept. 14. If the Eagles can bounce back from that defeat as well as they did against St. Joe, the championship game should be a great battle. It is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
Top-seeded Concordia Prep (10-1) dominated defending champion St. Mary’s (4-5), 28-7, in one of the B Conference semifinals and John Carroll (7-4) went on the road and topped second-seeded Archbishop Curley (6-6), 26-18, in the other semi.
John Carroll trailed Curley 10-0 in the first quarter, but the Patriots scored 28 straight points on four touchdown runs by senior Avin Alexandre, including a pair of 80-yard TD runs on consecutive touches. He finished with 319-yards rushing in the contest.
During the regular season, John Carroll suffered a 34-9 setback against Concordia Prep. The B Conference championship game is scheduled to kickoff at 2:00 p.m.
